My idea is to start in Boston (or Maine), and start going across the country in a more or less diagonal direction to San Diego.   Along the way, I want to ask for vegan options in little mom & pop diners and see what they say.      Anywhere people have never heard the word vegan I could explain it and leave some literature.  


Also I want to start with the Boston vegetarian society, and ask who knows who edging out into the countryside going away from the city.    I would like to see how far out a  personal network of vegans extends into the country.     If possible I would like to meet these people and see what they do for outreach, if anything.   I would like to keep a log of who lives in what zip code and see how far I have to go between vegans.  

I would like to see how many vegans I can meet travelling across the country.   

Here's an example:   I live very close to Detroit Michigan.   I have met vegans in Flint, Toledo, and Ann Arbor.   We know there are vegans elsewhere in the state.    My friend in Toledo knows some vegans south of Toledo.
